Period poverty: Lib Dems call for more support succeeds!

2 Feb 2023

Cllr Chessie Flack, Lib Dem Children and Young persons lead recently called for the council to provide free, and where possible sustainable, period products in all the council’s public accessible toilets and buildings including the civic centre, libraries and community centres.

In the middle of a cost of living crisis, period products can be seens as just too expensive for some families. A study last year found that 1 in 4 teenage girls in London weren’t able to afford period products.

Chessie Flack said: “We are simply calling on Merton Council to look at how we make women and girls lives just a bit easier. People should not be having to choose between lunch and period products, especially when councils can offer support. Putting period products in all publicly accessible toilets – along with the means to dispose of them -  is just one way we can help them out.”

At the Full Council held on 1st February the Lib Dems have secured this promise from the council in a unanimous vote.
