Modernising Merton: Lib Dems plan for a Borough Fit for the Future
Merton Liberal Democrats have today unveiled a new plan to modernise the borough, addressing mounting pressures on housing, local services and infrastructure, while setting out a vision for a more accessible, sustainable and forward-looking community.
The number of families waiting for a secure home in Merton has now climbed above 10,000, while millions of pounds are being spent each year on temporary accommodation that offers little stability for families and poor value for taxpayers. At the same time, opportunities to deliver affordable, energy-efficient housing have been delayed or missed.
The Liberal Democrats’ plan sets out a comprehensive approach to making Merton a borough fit for the 21st century. Key measures include improving access to council services, delivering modular homes on unused sites, investing in parks and green spaces, expanding EV charging infrastructure, improving transport accessibility, and protecting local heritage assets.
The Lib Dems are committed to fixing the Council’s “front door” so residents and businesses can access services quickly and with dignity, building more affordable homes using modern construction methods, and delivering a ‘Parks Promise’ to improve facilities and community engagement.
This plan forms part of the Liberal Democrats’ ‘Six to Fix’ priorities for the 2026 local elections.
Commenting, Cllr Anthony Fairclough, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Opposition said:
“People across Merton continue to feel the impact of a Labour administration that has failed to plan ahead.
“Modernising Merton should make life easier, not harder. Yet residents are told to make greener choices without the infrastructure to support them, and too many services remain slow, confusing or inaccessible.
“The Liberal Democrats want Merton to be fit for the future with a comprehensive plan to become a 21st Century borough.”
