Cricket Green Liberal Democrats

Yu Wing Wong, Will Woodward and Viv Vella are your Lib Dem team for Cricket Green ward

Viv Vella

Viv has lived in Merton for the best part of her life. She went to primary school here and later was to begin her career as a teacher in Merton, teaching French and PE at Park House Middle School. She believes our primary schools are at the heart of neighbourhoods. Schools deserve proper investment in their facilities and the resources to give every child the very best start in life.

Viv raised two children as a single parent in this community, so she has experience of the reality that comes with managing a working career, childcare costs and having time for family and friends.

Good sport and physical activity provisions matter for keeping children and adults active and healthy. Facilities for this should be a priority for any forward-thinking council.

The Cricket Green allotments, cricket club, and golf club are genuine community assets. Places where residents of all ages can come together, stay active, and take pride in their local area. These
facilities must be protected and properly supported.

She believes a thriving community depends on a vibrant high street and strong local businesses. She will champion independent businesses, push for a high street environment that is welcoming and accessible, and help ensure that the council does everything it can to help our local economy flourish.

As a Liberal Democrat, she believes in a fair, inclusive, and thriving Society. She understands that a well-run council must spend residents' money wisely, and that any local government needs to be honest, transparent, and genuinely accountable to the people it serves. She is committed to fighting for a council that genuinely supports the people who live here.

Yuwing Wong

Yuwing Wong is an organic farmer from Hong Kong who moved to the UK in December 2020. He is the founder of AuLaw Organic Farm UK CIC, where he actively promotes sustainable living and empowers people to grow their own food—whether in their back gardens, allotments, or co-growing in community gardens.

Deeply committed to community development, Yuwing volunteers in three community gardens, bringing people together through growing, learning, and sharing. He is a strong advocate for good food initiatives and crop-sharing activities, working to build a healthier, more connected, and resilient community.

Yuwing greatly enjoyed his life as a university athlete. After graduating, he spent over 30 years as a university Taekwondo team coach, shaping generations of students with discipline, resilience, and integrity. His dedication also extends to his family—his wife and two sons have all trained under his guidance.

Yuwing is passionate about protecting the natural environment and safeguarding sustainable resources for future generations. He believes in taking action, not just speaking—and that every individual has a responsibility to contribute, support one another, and build a stronger community together.

Please vote for Yuwing Wong as your councillor and make Merton brilliant together.

Will Woodward

Up until recently Will was lucky enough to own and run Commonside Cafe right in the centre of Mitcham. You would have seen him most days behind the counter!

Will has lived in the Mitcham and Tooting areas for over 14 years and really wants to build something locally. Working in our town centre everyday has really made it clear to him that we need so much more from our local council. Will spent some time speaking to business owners about their frustrations and lack of action and we continue to see decline - Will got local businesses to sign a joint letter together to finally get action from the council on road closures that were damaging our businesses!

Will believes Mitcham can be so much better. We can all agree that the town centre is suffering with shop closures and preparations for new and unpopular housing development. Poorly managed road closures and utilities works clog our roads, streets are dirty, planting is incomplete. We’ve lost our banks, key high street shops, and our major supermarket, and seen independent business close or shrink in size. We have even lost our local police station front counter due to cuts from the Mayor of London. Key historical assets in the ward, such as the Burn Bullock, have been left to rot.

Will says “We can improve our town centre by thinking big on transport, supporting the right development and getting tough on the anti-social behaviour which blights our area. We must be able to see the positive side our town which had been abandoned by long standing mismanagement. I will be standing for Council right here in my home ward of Cricket Green in May this year. This area has long been held by Labour locally. It is clear that after decades of running our area they have run out of ideas and have become complacent and ineffective.”
