Get serious on street cleaning

Merton's Labour, Conservative and Residents Association Councillors failed to support a Liberal Democrat call for action on street cleaning, at Merton Council's full meeting on 9 July 2014.

Cllr Mary-Jane Jeanes' motion asked the Labour administration to make money available to ensure street cleaning on residential roads followed after the refuse and recycling collections - and also to sort proper monitoring of the "weekly" street sweep. She also noted that there had been an underspend of £1million in the Waste budget for the year 2013-14.

"We all know that people in Merton are concerned about litter and mess on the streets and that things have got worse since the Labour administration ended the practice of street sweeping following refuse and recycling collections. But when they're not even willing to have a debate on the issue - which so many residents mentioned during the local elections - how can Merton's Labour and Conservative councillors be serious about street cleaning?" said Cllr Jeanes.
