COVID-19: Coronavirus advice

As of 16 March 2020 the Government has announced a series of new measures to combat the spread of coronavirus. These include working from home as much as possible, avoiding unnecessary travel, reducing social contact and avoiding public spaces like bars, restaurants and theatres.

The Government's guidance on these measures can be read online here - please take a moment to read it carefully.

If you are aged 70 or over, you are pregnant, or you have a health condition which means you would normally be instructed to get the flu jab each year you are advised to take additional precautions - please read the guidance above and refer to the table below.

More general advice from the NHS on coronavirus, symptoms and how to avoid catching or spreading the virus can be found online here.

The table below provides a helpful summary of the Government's recommended measures:

This is a stressful time for everyone, so it is more important than ever that we take a moment to think about others, especially those who are most vulnerable. Here are a few ideas for how we can help:

If you have elderly/vulnerable neighbours consider dropping a note through their door with your contact details so they can get in touch if they are worried or need a hand. A template postcard you could use is available here.

A non-political Merton mutual aid group is now on facebook to offer support to vulnerable people in the community (this is the facebook page), and people are also offering support via the NextDoor website.

Consider donating to your local foodbank to help them support people, details of Wimbledon foodbank are here.

Please also make sure when doing your daily shop that you only buy as much as you need for yourself, otherwise you could risk leaving vulnerable people without essential supplies. Supermarket supply chains are not expected to be affected and providers have advised that there will be enough to go around as long as everyone only buys as much as they need.

If you have any concerns please get in touch with your local councillor, as they may be able to help. You can find their contact details here.

This page reflects what we understand the position to be as of 17 March 2020 and will be updated as and when we become aware of any changes to official guidance.
