November 2009 - Raynes Park waste food processing plant on hold: The Wimbledon Guardian reports that the plans by developer Workspace Glebe to build a food waste processing plant on the Rainbow Industrial Estate have been delayed until the 'South London Waste Plan' has been finalised. The Waste Plan will determine where and how waste in this part of London will be dealt with in the future. Wimbledon Liberal Democrats responded to the recent 'consultation' on the proposed sites for waste facilities, and the policies controlling development allowed on those sites. The consulation process was flawed and confusing, it was extremely difficult for people to have their say on this huge issue. Nonetheless, we pushed for the Waste Plan to contain proper proposals for reducing waste - as this is the most important environmental action we can take. Furthermore, under the plan new waste plants are not supposed to have a negative impact on communities or the environment. Therefore, we argued for proper (and genuine) involvement of the local community in determining how a proposal will affect them and the place they live.
We also argued strongly against the inclusion of the Rainbow Industrial Estate on the shortlist of potential sites for development.

The measure of inflation they usually use to justify Council Tax increases here in Merton (RPI) is only about 0.1%!  Council tax is a desperately unfair tax.
