LOCAL ELECTIONS 2006

Liberal Democrats miss taking council seats in West Barnes ward by 80 votes. Local campaigners Mary-Jane Jeanes, Helen Herd and Peter Taylor increased their share of the vote to nearly 40% of all votes cast, rubbishing
the Tories' claim that the area is "staunchly Conservative" on their website.

After a tough fight in Dundonald ward, Liberal Democrats Kirsty Armstrong, Anthony Fairclough and Andrew Falconer gained double the number of votes received in 2002, a 21.5% share of votes cast and a 7.5% swing from the Labour party. Kirsty came a clear second with 740 votes, behind the Conservatives, but ahead of all three Labour candidates. Anthony and Andrew acheived 648 and 525 votes respectively.

Liberal Democrat candidates moved into second place in Raynes Park, Hillside and Village wards ahead of the Labour party. Across Wimbledon, the Liberal Democrat's share of the vote rose to 17.4% (+2.83), Labour dropped to 18.69% (-4.13%), the Greens achieved 5.78% (-1.93%) and the Conservatives' share was up at 50.37% (+8.95%).
