Commuters across South London are fighting to save local Thameslink services. Network Rail has said it may cut the direct link between south London, the City and central London, commonly known as the ‘Wimbledon loop’, after the Thameslink upgrade is completed in 2016.As a result of the change, trains would terminate at Blackfriars, leaving thousands of commuters without a direct link to several London stations and other busy train stations throughout the south east (the Thameslink programme’s FAQs can be seen here). There are nine stations in Merton that would be affected by this proposal: St Helier, Morden South, South Merton, Wimbledon Chase, Wimbledon, Haydons Road, Tooting, Mitcham Junction and Mitcham Eastfields. Lib Dems in Streatham, Sutton, Wandsworth, Merton and Southwark have joined forces to oppose the cut backs to local train services that use the ‘Wimbledon Loop’. “We are determined to stop Network Rail’s cuts to our local train services, which were made without considering local people” said campaigner Shas Sheehan,“But we need your help to make them change their mind!” Show your support for this campaign and help save train services to central London by signing our online petition. <-p> “Please sign our petition and get friends, neighbours and work colleagues to sign too,” said Shas.
