| COUNCIL TAX LOWER WITH LIBERAL DEMOCRATS? |
September 2005 The average Band-D council tax across Lib Dem-run councils in London is £1193 - in Merton we currently pay £1247 a year. This means that, on average, council tax paid by residents of councils run by Liberal Democrats (Kingston, Islington, Southwark, Sutton and Lambeth) is £54 a year less than the tax we pay here in Merton. Other parties will try to claim that Liberal Democrats are the "high tax" party - but that's not the case. Nationally, Liberal Democrat policy is to campaign for a local income tax, as we believe the current system of council tax is an unfair and regressive tax that places a higher burden on those least able to pay. Merton Lib Dems want the best local services for the tax we pay, and would work with public, private and voluntary organisations to achieve this aim. NOTES: Mean average based on figures for 2005/6 Band-D council tax from the five councils referred to above. All figures taken from www.upmystreet.com
