IS PLASTIC STILL FANTASTIC? Print E-mail
Lib Dem campaigners support making our shopping areas plastic bag freeWe get through over one billion plastic bags every month.

Once discarded, the bags become a hazard to wildlife, and they do not biodegrade even after hundreds of years in landfill sites.

You may have read about schemes being set up locally to reduce the number of plastic bags in use. Households in Wimbledon Park have been given a cotton bag by a local charity and many shops no longer hand out free polythene bags.

Earlier in the year, as part of our campaign to reduce landfill waste, Merton Liberal Democrats wrote to local supermarkets asking what they were doing to cut down on unnecessary packaging and to encourage them to do more. We also wrote to the Council's trading standards department, and were shocked to find that they don't really enforce the rules on this.
As the next stage of our campaign, the local Liberal Democrats want to know if you would support Motspur Park and Raynes Park shopping areas becoming plastic bag free too?
