£MILLIONS CUT FROM COUNCIL SERVICES Print E-mail

Tories put hanging baskets before vital services
Conservative plans to cut around £14 million from front line local services have recently come to light.

Wimbledon Lib Dem spokesman Stephen Gee said: "The poor state of Council finances is not just the Tories' fault. Labour were in charge between 1990-2006. But the Conservatives have made some dreadful spending choices recently, wasting thousands of pounds of taxpayers' money."

"For example, budgeting £46,000 on consultants to advise whether to keep the 200m long bus lane on Hartfield Road in Wimbledon and £8000 on changing the Council's motto to their election slogan. Now they're seriously suggesting £32,000 on new hanging baskets and massively increasing councillors' allowances.

"Local people deserve better. Last March, Tory Council bosses sneered at our calls to involve the public in making budget decisions.

"We're challenging them to discuss the difficult decisions that have to be made with residents."
