WIMBLEDON LIB DEMS KICK OFF GENERAL ELECTION CAMPAIGN Print E-mail

Wimbledon Lib Dems congratulate Stephen on his selectionAt a packed meeting in Wimbledon Community Centre on 5 March, local Liberal Democrats chose Stephen Gee as their candidate for the next General Election. With pressure increasing on Gordon Brown to call a snap election as soon as he's made Prime Minister, local Lib Dems are already kicking off the campaign. Stephen fought for the Lib Dems in Wimbledon in 2005, achieving the highest increase in share of the vote of any of the parties.

Stephen said "I am delighted to have been selected to fight for the Liberal Democrats in Wimbledon. I care passionately about the area, I grew up and was educated in the West Barnes Ward and understand the issues that matter to local residents. Liberal Democrats campaign all year round, and I'm keen to get out and meet residents and listen to their problems. The Labour party has all but collapsed in Wimbledon. At the last local elections, Lib Dem candidates came second to the Tories in half of Wimbledon. And at the last General Election we saw the largest increase in share of the vote of any party. In Wimbledon the real choice is between Liberal Democrats and the Tories."

Anthony Fairclough, chair of Merton Liberal Democrats said "I'm pleased that Lib Dem members have chosen such an excellent candidate to represent us at the next election. I look forward to working with Steve in the near future, helping to improve the lives of Wimbledon residents".
