October 2009 - Labour fails to match words with actions on environment: Diana Coman, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for Mitcham & Morden, has the story on how Labour MPs refused to back a vote calling for Government, Parliament and all public sector bodies to cut their carbon pollution by 10% by the end of 2010. Diana had written to Mitcham & Morden's Labour MP encouraging her to back the plans; however, she voted against the plans. July 2009 - A fresh start for Britain: On 22 July, Nick Clegg launched a Fresh Start for Britain, outlining the principles on which the Liberal Democrats will build their General Election Manifesto. To guide our approach to change we have set out our principles for government, our approach to public spending and our 3 key priorities: creating a sustainable economy, building a fair society, and cleaning up politics. You can download a PDF document here. June 2009 - Working to Fix Mitcham: A new team comes together to work for the Lavender Fields area of Mitcham. Diana Coman has the full story. June 2009 - Local and European Elections 2009: The BBC's projected national vote share for the local elections is Conservatives 38% (-6%), Liberal Democrats 28% (+3%), Labour 23% (-1%). The Liberal Democrats are the only of the three to increase their projected share from last year's local elections. At the European Elections we held our own nationally, with 11 MEPs (+1). Jonathan Fryer narrowly missed out on becoming the second Lib Dem MEP for London. The results in Merton can be found here. We were pleased to hold our third place, pushing the Greens and UKIP into fourth and fifth place respectively. May 2009 - One Hour Bus Ticket campaign launched: Caroline Pidgeon, the Lib Dem London Assembly Transport Spokesperson, was joined by Tom Brake MP, councillors and campaigners from across London at the launch of a Londonwide campaign to persuade the Mayor to introduce one hour bus tickets . . . click here for more or sign the online petition backing the one hour bus ticket here. April 2009 - Stronger together, poorer apart: Elections to the European Parliament are on 4 June. London Liberal Democrats' Euro-election campaign will focus on how co-operation with our European partners will help Britain survive the current financial crisis, lead global efforts to reduce climate change, and help to tackly issues such as drug smuggling, people trafficking and terrorist threats. Apply for postal vote by 19 May at www.aboutmyvote.com February 2009 - A taxing subject: Tory-run Merton Council wants to increase their part of Council Tax by 2.5%. The measure of inflation they usually use to justify Council Tax increases here in Merton (RPI) is currently only about 0.1%! Council tax is a desperately unfair tax. It does not relate to your ability to pay. So if a freeze is possible, we think it's the right thing to do at the moment. The Council makes the final decision on 4 March.
