December 2011 - Pupil Premium increase sees 5,500 Merton children benefit: Sarah Teather, the Children’s Minister and Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central, has announced the Pupil Premium will increase to £600 per pupil in 2012 from the current level of £488. November 2011 - Thameslink cuts: all still to fight for: In a letter to Merton Liberal Democrats, the Department for Transport said any decision on the proposed reduction to the Wimbledon loop train services are "still some way off" and would only be made after proper consultation with local residents. September 2011 - Cross party talks on school places: We welcome the long-awaited acceptance by Merton Council's Labour administration that it must formulate a proper strategy for primary and secondary places. A motion was passed by councillors on September 14 committing the Council to setting out a 5-year strategy for dealing with the increases in school places. September 2011 - Campaigners launch Morden Tavern petition: Campaigners fighting against a planning application for the Mordern Tavern have launched a petition calling for an independent valuation of the site of the former pub. The Campaign for Morden Tavern says the Council has a duty to get the best value for the site.

July 2011 - St Helier & St George's merger opposed: Sutton & Cheam MP, Paul Burstow has called for bosses at St. Helier & St George's Hospitals to pause, listen and reflect over plans for a merger. Paul is also the Lib Dem minister for care services.

June 2011 - Olympic tickets u-turn: Using freedom of information laws, Lib Dem London Assembly Member Dee Doocey revealed that Merton Council planned to spend £4000 on tickets for the Merton Mayor and Consort to attend the Olympic Opening and Closing ceremonies. Following the public backlash, the decision to use public money has now been abandoned.

And from April, Lib Dem income tax changes will benefit millions on middle and low incomes. Most people - including over 60,000 here in Merton - will be £200 better off.

March 2011 - Labour: Merton's budget "an occasion for regret": Merton's Labour and Residents Association councillors refuse to use a small amount of the money left over from last year's budget - bearing in mind this runs into millions of pounds - to mitigate the worst effects of the cuts they are making to vital local services. Lib Dem councillors voted to maintain the funding for Deen City Farm and the Brightwell Respite centre, to keep open the Weir Road Recycling centre, and not to reduce the street cleaning budget.
