Hughes calls for £700 tax cuts for working people

Simon Hughes MP"I need you to sign this petition now" says Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Simon Hughes. The MP for Bermonsey and Old Southwark has called on the Government to speed up Lib Dem plans to raise the tax-free threshold to £10,000, "giving you a tax cut when you need it most".

Under the Lib Dem plan, working people would save £700 a year, equivalent to an extra £60 in wages every month. The move would also lift more than 3.5 million older and low-paid people out of paying any income tax whatsoever.

On Tuesday 10 January, Liberal Democrats have been talking to commuters at stations and other transport hubs across London about the plan to make fares fairer. Merton Lib Dems were talked to people in Wimbledon, Raynes Park, Mitcham and Morden town centres.

500 free nursery places in Merton

In November, Liberal Democrat ministers published plans to extend the 15 free hours of nursery a week to 250,000 two-year-olds from the households with the lowest incomes.

Merton Liberal Democrats are delighted that approximately 500 children across Merton are expected to benefit and, by giving this help to children from the poorest backgrounds in our area, will benefit them for years to come.

Pupil Premium increase sees 5,500 Merton children benefit

Sarah Teather, the Children’s Minister and Liberal Democrat MP for Brent Central, has announced the Pupil Premium will increase to £600 per pupil in 2012 from the current level of £488.  Under the scheme, which provides schools with additional funding for each pupil eligible for Free School Meals in the past six years, approximately 5,500 children in Merton will benefit.
